The program is available on IRS.gov through Oct. 15.<\/p>\n<p>The fastest way for taxpayers to get their refund is to file electronically and use direct deposit.<\/p>\n<p>See <a title=\"The filing deadline for extension filers is almost here\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/the-filing-deadline-for-extension-filers-is-almost-here\" data-entity-uuid=\"01a0c1ec-7405-4130-8e3b-91c3d7e39c91\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">IRS Tax Tip 2019-132<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Tax Relief in Disaster Situations<\/h2>\n<p>The IRS extended deadlines that apply to filing returns, paying taxes, and performing certain other time-sensitive acts for certain taxpayers affected by Hurricane Florence. The federally declared disaster areas include hurricane victims in certain counties in North Carolina and South Carolina. The extension applies to deadlines &#8211; either an original or extended due date &#8211; that occurred on or after September 7, 2018 and before January 31, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS often updates its information on disaster relief efforts. For the latest news,\u00a0see the <a title=\"IRS disaster relief page\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations\" data-entity-uuid=\"f153d1e1-c821-4415-8452-007a7a7afee7\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">IRS disaster relief page<\/a> frequently.<\/p>\n<h2>Where&#8217;s My Refund?<\/h2>\n<p>Taxpayers who filed their tax returns should know that the easiest way to check on their tax refund is to use &#8220;<a title=\"Where\u2019s My Refund?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/refunds\" data-entity-uuid=\"a30296cc-6e05-4dd1-931f-6ccf40afa66e\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">Where\u2019s My Refund?<\/a>&#8221; This tool is available on IRS.gov and through the <a title=\"IRS2GoApp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs2goapp\" data-entity-uuid=\"e3c5fb58-47ee-4318-aee4-a26a2d9ca765\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">IRS2Go app<\/a>. The fastest way to get that tax refund is to use IRS e-file and direct deposit.<\/p>\n<p>Taxpayers can use Where\u2019s My Refund? to start checking on the status of their tax return within 24 hours after the IRS receives an e-filed return. Check the <a title=\"Tax Reform\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/tax-reform\" data-entity-uuid=\"e8471673-3c14-4749-a65f-96bb3ea9e361\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">Tax Reform<\/a> page for the latest updates.<\/p>\n<h2>Tax Withholding<\/h2>\n<p>The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act changed the way tax is calculated. The IRS encourages taxpayers to perform a quick \u201cpaycheck checkup\u201d by using the <a title=\"Tax Withholding Estimator\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/tax-withholding-estimator\" data-entity-uuid=\"a4de4a54-850e-4ed0-8e98-4191a8185e9f\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">Withholding Estimator<\/a> to check if they have the right amount of withholding for their personal situation.<\/p>\n<h2>Consumer Alerts on Tax Scams<\/h2>\n<p>\u202aNote that the IRS will never:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. The groups are: CBE Group of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Conserve of Fairport, N.Y.; Performant of Livermore, Calif.; and Pioneer of Horseheads, N.Y. The taxpayer\u2019s account will only be assigned to one of these agencies, never to all four. No other private group is authorized to represent the IRS.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS will always notify a taxpayer before transferring their account to a private collection agency (PCA). The IRS will send a letter to the taxpayer and their tax representative informing them that their account is being assigned to a PCA and giving the name and contact information for the PCA. This mailing will include a copy of <a title=\"Publication 4518, What You Can Expect When the IRS Assigns Your Account to a Private Collection Agency (PDF)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p4518.pdf\" data-entity-uuid=\"2096ad2e-170d-49ce-83bb-718b11569545\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-substitution=\"pup_linkit_media\">Publication 4518, What You Can Expect When the IRS Assigns Your Account to a Private Collection Agency (PDF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA)<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/businesses\/corporations\/foreign-account-tax-compliance-act-fatca\" data-entity-uuid=\"fd2de238-60ac-4735-a5f4-12be73504503\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">FATCA<\/a>\u00a0refers to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act that requires reporting on specified foreign accounts by U.S. taxpayers and foreign financial institutions.
