IRS poll: More Americans believe it\u2019s \u2018OK\u2019 to cheat on your taxes<\/a><\/h3>\n

With the arrival of\u00a0tax bills and refunds<\/a>\u00a0in the late spring and early summer, the\u00a0Internal Revenue Service<\/a>\u00a0(IRS) is warning taxpayers against various tax scams that have begun to crop up.<\/p>\n

Two specific scams that the\u00a0IRS highlighted<\/a>\u00a0last week are variations of long-running tax scams, including one where taxpayers are threatened with a tax bill from a non-existent government agency. The other scam, which\u00a0the IRS has deemed \u201cthe SSN hustle\u201d is when scammers claim a taxpayer\u2019s\u00a0Social Security number<\/a>\u00a0is suspended or canceled.<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0warning from the IRS<\/a>, the \u201cfake tax agency\u201d scam is when a letter is sent in the mail with a threat of a lien or levy from the IRS, typically based on fake delinquent taxes owed to the \u201cBureau of Tax Enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no such agency,\u201d the IRS said. \u201cThe lien notification scam also likely references the IRS to confuse potential victims into thinking the letter is from a legitimate organization.\u201d<\/p>\n
