As a result, some taxpayers could have paid too little tax during the year,\u00a0if they did not submit a properly-revised W-4 withholding form to their employer or increase their estimated tax payments. However, the 100 percent threshold is increased to 110 percent if a taxpayer\u2019s adjusted gross income is more than $150,000, or $75,000 if married and filing a separate return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px; color: #333333; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; box-sizing: border-box; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">For waiver purposes only, today\u2019s relief lowers the 90 percent threshold to 85 percent. This means that a taxpayer will not owe a penalty if they paid at least 85 percent of their total\u00a02018\u00a0tax liability. If the taxpayer paid less than 85 percent, then they are not eligible for the waiver and the penalty will be calculated as it normally would be, using the 90 percent threshold.
